Question 5 - How did you attract/address your audience?

Question 4 - Who would the audience be?

Question 1 - How does the film use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Question 3 - What kind of institution would distribute your film and why?

An institution that would distribute a movie that features someone making a film, similar to a found-footage movie like The Blair Witch Project or Project Almanac.

Maybe MTV pictures or Red Hour Films because of some of the movies they've had, unfortunately even though they have distributed some of these kinds of movies there re few and far between so they might not eat to distribute our movie over the films they get regularly.

Fox searchlight is an ideal distribution company for our movie since its related to 20th Century Fox but is a smaller branch that will take in smaller movies.

Columbia pictures is what I'd prefer to have as a distributor. From what I've seen they have made some good comedy movies and some action flicks too, but the problem is that Columbia Pictures and the most other ideal studios are too big in he industry to want to take in our independent film, they would probably shrug us off. Same with 20th Century Fox and the rest of the 'Production Giants'.

Question 2 - How does it represent social groups?

The social groups present are young black males, gamers, .
In our film we represent young black males as productive which is demonstrated by how we've shot the sequence as if he is shooting a hero movie, the dialogue he speaks in the first 5 seconds supports this; "Okay... superhero monologue, let's go!". The audience can also see him as enthusiastic because he sounds quite motivated to record this 'superhero monologue'.

Young black people in all forms of media that I've seen are either ghetto stereotypes or a companion to the main character with a charismatic personality.
For example James from Ride Along with his bad boy attitude and Rhodey from Iron Man 2 being Tony Starks best friend and sidekick.

But we've made our character look like a sort of nerdy film geek or YouTuber who is taking the lead in this production.

The main character s also a gamer as you can se from this point in the film.

This film represents gamers as nerdy and creative, because the main character has created this low budget costume out of regular clothes and is trying to utilise generic tropes from his favourite superhero films. They could also be construed as resourceful, again because of his home-made costume.

Evaluation on Preliminary Task

How does the film use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
When filming the first few scenes (walking through the halls), we used a handheld camera because then it creates a more relatable feeling of reality which is good for a Slice-of-Life film. The way we started challenges the conventions as the ominous music and grayscale tone is found in horror films, but we used it to build up to the reveal of something mundane. In order to keep the light and relaxed atmosphere we used the backing track of Loaded by Primal Scream which has quite a chilled out rhythm.

How does it represent social groups?
Our film represents young males as hard-working, this is suggested by their costumes and the scenery

What kind of institution would distribute your film and why?
Maybe Universal, because they have helped Working Title Films distribute the Cornetto trilogy which our movies camera movements and editing style is based.

Who would the audience be?
The audience would be an audience that enjoys british comedies from an age range of 15-24, suitable for both genders.

How did you attract/address your audience?
We were able to address our audience by having a young, working class male in the every shot.

What have you learnt about technologies from making this film?
We learned about the limitations of the Canon DSLR Camera we used because of a few road blocks we faced while filming. We became very efficient at editing in Final Cut Pro, we learnt how to do some creative transitions and effects, for example the glitch effect at the end. We also learned how to build up tension and create an ominous atmosphere by using filters and music.

What do you think you have learnt looking back at the preliminary task and the progression of the full product?
I have learnt that not all ideas are great as there were some parts that were good in eating but when shown in the full product it looked a bit off, like it didn't fit the atmosphere of the scene, there was a music cut at the start as well which I thick could have been pulled off better.

Evaluation of 9 to 5
by Joshua and Aiden

Now that we have finished our Preliminary Task, 9 to 5, I can start looking through it.

The editing used in the film is quite good in my opinion, the fast jump cuts between mid shots and close ups are quite effective, and they flow quite well with the actions on screen.
My personal favourite parts were the ending scene and the tracking shot down the hallway.
